Developed in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, the Americorps VISTA program assists communities in developing their capacitiy to meet local needs. Since 1965, more than 100,000 VISTAs have joined forces with 12,000 public agencies and not-for-profit groups to help communities across the country by doing things like increasing housing opportunities, developing literacy programs, and improving healthcare in underserved communities.
